This is a
fabulous serving set was most likely made by John Wendt. Wendt occupied the
fourth and fifth floors of the building owned by Ball, Black & Co. of New
York. The company sold much of Wendt’s silver and put their mark on it. Wendt
did not mark much of his silver. Wendt made silver for many retailers but as he
did not put his own mark on many pieces, identification is problematic. We know
of anther piece in this pattern that was sold by Ball, Black & Co., so we
are pretty confident that Wendt was the Maker. Another thing that supports the
Wendt attribution is that the shape of the spoon bowl is the same as other
spoons identified as Wendt’s. The fork is
approximately 10 ¾” long and weighs 96.0 grams or 3.085 ozt. The spoon is 11
3/8” long and weighs 96.0 grams or 3.085 ozt; the same as the fork. Both are in
outstanding condition, showing very little signs of use. The original vermeil
is intact. I based calling the design "Cannon" because of the shape of the handles. We currently have an outstanding ladle in his Bust pattern listed on
eBay. We also have outstanding silver by Tiffany, Gorham, Durgin, Whiting, Red
& Barton, and other fine makers listed. Also, check out our British and
Continental silver. Please contact us if you have any questions.
